Feed & Attention
How to see someone's X posts without following them
You can view public X posts without following, but the algorithm still hides them. Here is how following, lists, and a watched feed actually compare.
You can see someone's X posts without following them if their account is public: open their profile or the post URL and read. Following changes delivery, not access. The harder problem is seeing their posts consistently, because the For You feed is ranked and does not owe you every post.
Can you see someone's X posts without following them?
Yes, for public accounts. X lets anyone view a public profile and its posts (X Help: public and protected posts). Protected accounts are different: you need an approved follow request, and without it you see nothing.
So access is not the obstacle. Attention is. A public profile gives you a snapshot, not a system, and it only works when you remember to open it.
Following, viewing, and watching
| Action | What it changes | What it does not change |
|---|---|---|
| Viewing a profile | You can read recent public posts | Nothing is collected, and you must remember to look |
| Following | Their posts enter your Following timeline | For You still ranks what you see |
| Adding to a list | A separate timeline of chosen accounts | Still one platform, no archive |
| Watching in a feed | Posts collected on a schedule | Only public posts are available |
Why you still miss their posts
If you spend your time in For You, the algorithm decides what reaches you. It pulls in posts from accounts you do not follow and ranks by predicted engagement. Following someone is an input, not a guarantee.
The Following tab is closer to chronological, but it is still a timeline inside one app. It does not collect anything while you are away, and it does not cover the same person's LinkedIn activity.
Three ways to keep up
- Use a list for the accounts you care about. It is free and keeps the timeline focused.
- Turn on notifications for the few people you cannot miss. It is a ping, not an archive.
- Collect public posts into one feed so delivery does not depend on the algorithm.
What about protected or blocked accounts?
A block is a boundary. If someone blocked you, you cannot view their posts while logged in, and no honest tool can promise otherwise. Protected accounts require approval. Surfolks collects public posts only and does not bypass either. The same boundary applies on LinkedIn; see LinkedIn follow vs. connect.
Common questions
Can you view X posts without an account?
Some public posts are viewable, but X increasingly asks you to sign in. A public profile is the more reliable path.
Does following someone on X notify them?
X does not send a notification for a follow, but your name can appear in their followers list.
Can I see posts from a private X account?
Only if the owner approves your follow request. There is no legitimate workaround.
What is the best way to see X posts without following?
Open the public profile for a quick read, use a list for a focused timeline, or collect the posts in a feed if you need history and consistency.
