LinkedIn follow vs. connect: what you actually see
Following someone on LinkedIn is not the same as connecting. Here is what each option shows you, what the feed hides, and how to see their posts anyway.
Following someone on LinkedIn is a one-way subscription to their public posts. Connecting is a mutual relationship that unlocks messaging and fuller profile access. Neither guarantees you will see what they publish, because the feed is ranked, not chronological, and it decides what surfaces.
What does following someone on LinkedIn actually do?
Following adds their public updates to the pool LinkedIn can show you (see LinkedIn's follow help). It does not send a request, does not need their approval, and does not notify them. It also does not create a conversation: you still cannot message them unless you are connected or use InMail.
The follow is silent by design. It is the lightest way to say you want to see more from this person without asking for anything in return.
Follow vs. connect: the differences that matter
| Action | What it gives you | What it does not give you |
|---|---|---|
| Follow | Their public posts may appear in your feed | Messaging, a mutual relationship, guaranteed delivery |
| Connect | A two-way relationship and direct messaging | Guaranteed reach, because the feed still ranks posts |
| Follow back | A signal that you want to see their work | A conversation on its own |
Does following someone mean you will see their posts?
No. A follow puts someone in the pool. The feed still decides what reaches you, using signals like how often you engage with that person, how close they are to your network, how recent the post is, and how long people spend reading it. A quiet account in a crowded network can disappear for weeks.
This is why people say they follow someone but never see them. The follow is working. The delivery is the problem.
What about a private profile or a blocked connection?
A block is a boundary. If someone blocked you, LinkedIn removes the connection and the follow, and you cannot re-follow while the block is in place. Their content may also be limited by their privacy settings. No honest tool can promise to show you posts from someone who blocked you, and a tool that claims it can is one you should not trust.
The line we keep
Surfolks collects public posts from people you choose. It does not connect, follow, message, or bypass a block. If someone has blocked you, their posts may be hidden or private, and we will not pretend otherwise.
How to see someone's LinkedIn posts without connecting
There are four practical routes, and they differ in how much they collect.
| Route | What you get | What you miss |
|---|---|---|
| Open their profile | Recent public activity when you remember to look | History, alerts, a routine |
| Search their name | A snapshot of recent posts | Everything the algorithm does not surface |
| Turn on the notification bell | A ping when they post | An archive, filters, quiet delivery |
| Add them to a watched feed | Their posts collected on a schedule, in one place | Nothing, if the posts are public |
The first three depend on you remembering to look. The fourth, a watched feed, is the only one that works when you are away from the app.
When following is enough
If you want to keep up with a small list of five or ten people, on one platform, and you only need today's posts, following plus the notification bell is genuinely enough. It is free and it works. A dedicated feed starts to pay off when the list grows, when you need history, or when the people you care about are split across LinkedIn and X.
The test is simple: close the app and ask what you collected while you were away. If the answer is nothing, you have a reading habit, not a system.
Common questions
Does following someone on LinkedIn notify them?
No. Following is silent. The person may see you in their followers list, but LinkedIn does not send a notification for a follow.
Can you follow someone on LinkedIn without connecting?
Yes, if they allow follows. The Follow button appears on their profile. Some accounts only accept connection requests, so the option is not always available.
If someone blocked me, can I still see their posts?
No honest tool can guarantee that. A block removes the connection and the follow, and privacy settings may hide the content. Surfolks only collects public posts and does not bypass blocks.
Does following someone put their posts in my feed?
Sometimes. The feed is ranked, not chronological, so a follow improves the chance of delivery but does not guarantee it.
See the people you follow, in one place
Surfolks collects public LinkedIn and X posts from the people you choose, keeps a searchable history, and ranks them against your goals. It never acts on your account.
