Social listening for sales teams: a simple operating model
How a sales team runs social listening without noise: who owns the list, what gets routed, and the 15-minute daily pass that keeps accounts warm.
Social listening fails in teams when everyone assumes someone else is doing it. The fix is an operating model: one owner, one list, one daily pass, and clear rules for what gets routed to a rep. It does not require a new platform.
Listening is a team habit, not a tab
A shared tab is not a process. For the individual version of this work, see pre-outreach listening. Without an owner and a cadence, the list grows, the reading stops, and the tool becomes another dashboard nobody opens.
Who owns what
| Role | Owns | Cadence |
|---|---|---|
| Sales lead | The account list and the ICP | Quarterly |
| SDR or AE | Their accounts and replies | Daily |
| Marketing | The signals worth sharing | Weekly |
| Ops | Routing and data hygiene | Monthly |
The routing rules
Not every post deserves a rep. Route a post when it names a problem you solve, a change that affects budget, or a person entering a buying role. Skip generic motivation, reposts without a point, and anything that would make a reply feel intrusive.
The daily pass
- Open the team list, not the main feed. If the team uses X, a shared List is the simplest starting point.
- Scan for the three routing signals.
- Send each signal to the owner with one line of context.
- Reply to one post yourself if you have something useful.
- Close the tab.
What not to do
- Do not auto-DM a whole list.
- Do not assign every mention to a rep.
- Do not measure posts read.
- Do not let the list grow without pruning.
Common questions
How many accounts should a sales team listen to?
Start with the accounts in active pursuit. Ten to twenty per rep is a workable range. See [how to build a target account list](/blog/target-account-list-from-public-posts) for a starting point.
Should the whole team share one list?
Share the account list and the routing rules. Keep each rep's replies and notes private.
Do we need a social listening platform?
Not for a chosen account list. A watched feed plus a shared routine covers most B2B teams.
One list, one owner, one daily pass
Surfolks gives the team a shared, ranked view of the accounts that matter, without automating the outreach.
