ICP definition template (with example)
A one-page ideal customer profile template: four fields, a filled-in example, and the questions that make it useful for listening, not just selling.
This is the shortest ICP template that still works. Four fields, one sentence each, specific enough to act on. Copy it, fill it in for your best customer, and use it as a filter for whose posts you read and which conversations you join.
The template
| Field | Prompt | Your answer |
|---|---|---|
| Role | Who are they, in their job title or function? | |
| Situation | What is happening in their world right now? | |
| Pain | What problem are they actively feeling? | |
| Signal | How would you notice them in public? |
A filled-in example
| Field | Example |
|---|---|
| Role | Head of Growth or founder at a Series A B2B SaaS |
| Situation | Hiring their first sales team; outbound is not converting yet |
| Pain | Pipeline is expensive and cold email replies are falling |
| Signal | Posts about GTM experiments, hiring SDRs, or outbound results |
Notice what this excludes. It is not for enterprises, not for agencies, not for pre-product founders. The exclusion is the value: it tells you whose posts to read closely and whose to skim.
The questions that make it useful
- Could I name five real people who match this today? If not, it is too abstract.
- What would they be posting about if they had this pain?
- Which words do they use for the problem, in their own language?
- What would make me say no to someone who looks similar?
Use it as a listening filter
The best use of this template is not a sales target list. It is a filter for attention: the people who match are the ones whose public posts are worth your time.
How to use it week to week
- Add a handful of people who match the profile to your watchlist.
- Read their recent posts once a day or week.
- Reply where the post is about the pain you named.
- Note the language they use; update the profile as it sharpens.
If you do this for a month, you will know more about your market's real concerns than most competitor research will tell you, because you are reading what they actually say when they are not being surveyed.
Common questions
Is this template enough for a real go-to-market?
For early-stage founders, yes. Add firmographics and buying roles later, when you have a sales team that needs them. Start with four fields you will actually use.
What if I have several ICPs?
Make a separate four-field block for each. Keep them apart so the signals do not blur, and score posts against the one you are working on.
How do I know it is right?
You know it is working when the posts from people who match keep being about the pain you named. If they are not, revise the profile.
Score your feed against your ICP
Surfolks applies your goals to the posts from people you track, so the matching conversations surface first.
